Who is responsible for updates?
All Touch SurgeryTM Enterprise cloud services are actively managed and follow Medtronic security patching guidelines (e.g., operating systems, web/application servers, databases, etc.).
Medtronic Digital Surgery applies patches using a risk-based approach in accordance with the following schedule:
Impact/Severity | Patch Initiated | Patch Completed |
Critical | Within 24 hours of patch release | Within 1 week of patch release |
High | Within 1 week of patch release | Within 1 month of patch release |
Medium | Within 1 month of patch release | Within 2 months of patch release, unless ISO determines this to be an insignificant risk to the environment |
Medtronic provides all software releases and patch services for DS1 and pushes updates to DS1 devices through the DS1 application quarterly (or more frequent if Critical/High). A user-triggered self-service automatic update feature is built into the system. Whenever a new version of DS1 is released by Medtronic Digital Surgery (including security updates), a notification is sent to the DS1 application that is visible on the DS1 Wireless Controller. The user can choose to click the “System Update” button to update the DS1 computer. The update feature works by downloading a new system image from an AWS S3 bucket that will replace the one currently installed on the DS1 computer. Updates are distributed through Amazon Web Services (AWS).
How frequently are updates released?
DS1 software updates are released approximately every 3 months. The Touch SurgeryTM mobile apps on iOS and Android are released approximately every 2 weeks. The touchsurgery.com website undergoes continuous updates.
How quickly are updates implemented?
Within a few minutes on a normal internet connection.
Will updates disrupt workflow?
Software updates for the DS1 Computer must be selected manually on the wireless controller, and hence can be carried out at a time of the user’s convenience.
Will training be required after each update?
Training will not be required after each update. Release notes will be posted to the Touch Surgery Release Notes page. This will inform you as to what the updates are, and how they will affect the use of the DS1.
